A cul-de-lampe is an ornamental bracket or corbel that projects from a wall to support a vault rib, arch, column, or statue, typically tapering to a point or decorative finial at its base. The term comes from French and literally translates to “bottom of a lamp,” referring to the inverted, pendant-like shape of the element.
Applications
The cul-de-lampe is found most frequently in Gothic and late medieval architecture, where it serves as a transition element between a wall surface and a structural or decorative feature above it. In ribbed vault construction, for example, vault ribs sometimes terminate against a wall rather than continuing down to the floor on a full column or pilaster. In such cases, a cul-de-lampe provides the visual and structural endpoint, receiving the thrust of the rib and transferring it into the wall.
The form of a cul-de-lampe can range from simple and geometric to highly elaborate. In ecclesiastical buildings, cul-de-lampes were frequently carved with foliage, angels, human figures, grotesques, or heraldic emblems. The quality and intricacy of the carving often reflected the status of the building and the skill of the masons involved.
Beyond vault support, cul-de-lampes were also used to carry statues, particularly in church interiors and on facades. A sculpted saint or religious figure might stand on a cul-de-lampe projecting from a pier or wall, with a canopy (baldachin) above. This arrangement became a standard feature of Gothic church decoration.
In later architectural periods, the cul-de-lampe evolved into a more purely decorative element. Renaissance and Baroque architects used similar bracket forms for ornamental purposes, often in interior design contexts such as supporting busts, vases, or candelabras.
The cul-de-lampe is closely related to the corbel, though it is typically more decorative and specifically associated with a pendant or tapered profile.
