A glued truss is a load-bearing structure built up from several glued timber laminations, also known as glued-laminated timber or glulam, suitable for large spans.
By gluing thin layers of timber (laminations) together, a strong, stable and dimensionally stable element is created. This technique makes dimensions and shapes possible that cannot be achieved with solid timber.
How a glued truss works
The laminations are joined under pressure with a structural adhesive:
- The timber layers are selected for moisture content and quality
- Weak spots such as knots are distributed along the length
- The laminations are glued and cured under pressure
- The element can be formed straight or curved
The result is a beam or truss with a high strength-to-weight ratio and a low risk of shrinkage or cracking.
Application
Glued trusses are widely used where large, clear spans are required:
- Sports halls, swimming pools and riding arenas
- Agricultural sheds and industrial halls
- Bridges and public buildings with timber roofs
Advantages include low weight, the good fire resistance of solid timber, and the sustainable, bio-based raw material. In application, attention is needed for protection against moisture and for the detailing of the supports and connections.
