Veneer is a thin slice of wood, usually 0.5 to 3 mm thick, glued onto a substrate of sheet material or cheaper timber. Veneer gives an object the appearance of solid wood while the material is more stable, cheaper and more sustainable. Veneer has been used for centuries for luxury furniture, doors, panelling and interior finishes.
Production process
Veneer is produced from a log in several ways:
Rotary-cut veneer
- Peeling technique — the log rotates against a knife
- Thin, wide sheets — economic and fast
- Pattern: irregular flame effect
Flat-cut veneer (dosse)
- Slicing technique — knife cuts vertically through the log
- Classic flame pattern — natural rings visible

Book-matched veneer
- Two consecutive sheets — placed mirror-fashion
