What is ranging pole?

A ranging pole (also called a ranging rod or survey pole) is a straight rod or stake used on construction sites as an alignment and measuring tool. Ranging poles are used to set out straight lines, mark reference points, and check alignment during building and surveying work.

Application

Ranging poles have been used for centuries when setting out building works. On the construction site, two or more ranging poles are placed in a straight line to mark reference points. By sighting along the poles, it can be verified whether a wall, foundation, or other structural element runs true.

A traditional ranging pole is a wooden or metal rod approximately 2 to 3 meters (6 to 10 feet) long, often painted with alternating red-and-white or black-and-white bands for high visibility. In modern surveying, ranging poles are used in combination with optical instruments such as a theodolite or a leveling instrument.

When setting out a building, ranging poles are placed at corner points and along facade lines. By stretching builder’s lines between the poles, a precise grid is created within which foundations and walls are constructed. This process is known as setting out or staking out.

Beyond the construction site, ranging poles are also used in road construction, when laying cables and pipelines, and in navigation as maritime markers. In all these applications, the ranging pole is a simple but indispensable tool for accurate work.
