# What is insulation batting?

**Insulation batting is insulation material supplied in the form of flexible mats, rolls, or blankets.** It is primarily made from mineral wool (glass wool or stone wool) and is used for thermal and acoustic insulation in roofs, walls, and floors.

## Properties

– **Flexible** — conforms to irregular cavities and spaces
– **Lightweight** — easy to handle without heavy equipment
– **Good thermal performance** — lambda value typically between 0.032 and 0.040 W/mK
– **Fire-resistant** — mineral wool is non-combustible (Euroclass A1 or A2)
– **Sound-absorbing** — effectively absorbs sound waves

## Application

– **Roof insulation** — between rafters in a pitched roof
– **Wall insulation** — in timber stud or metal stud framing
– **Floor insulation** — between joists in a timber floor
– **Acoustic insulation** — in partition walls and ceilings

### Installation tips
– Always cut batting slightly wider than the cavity so it fits snugly by friction
– Wear gloves and a dust mask when handling glass wool
– Avoid thermal bridges by ensuring no gaps or compressed sections
