Granito is a seamless floor and wall finish consisting of a mixture of cement (or synthetic resin) with chips of natural stone, marble or granite, which after hardening is ground and polished into a smooth, decorative surface. It is closely related to terrazzo.
Application
Granito was widely used in corridors, stairwells, schools, hospitals and shops for its durability and clean appearance:
- Floors — as a monolithic poured floor or as prefabricated granito tiles.
- Stair treads and skirtings — for their wear resistance.
- Worktops and windowsills — as a hard, polished surface.
The stone chips determine the colour and pattern; mixing different types and colours creates decorative effects. After pouring and curing, the surface is ground in several passes until the chips show like a mosaic, after which it is polished. The distinction from terrazzo is gradual: granito usually refers to the finer, polished end result. The floor is hard, wear-resistant and easy to clean.
