Geomonitoring is the systematic measuring and monitoring of ground movements, settlement, vibrations and pore water pressure during and after construction, in order to safeguard the safety of the structure and its surroundings.
During excavation, pile driving or dewatering, the subsoil may move. Geomonitoring makes these changes visible, so that action can be taken in time before damage occurs.
What is measured
- Settlement: vertical lowering of the soil or adjacent buildings.
- Horizontal displacement: lateral movement of sheet piling or slopes.
- Vibrations: caused by pile driving, demolition or traffic.
- Pore water pressure: the pressure of groundwater in the pores of the soil.
- Cracks: forming in neighbouring buildings.
Application
Geomonitoring is used for:
- Deep excavations and underground construction.
- Works near historic or vulnerable buildings.
- Large infrastructure projects such as tunnels and bridges.
Measuring instruments such as level bolts, inclinometers, vibration meters and standpipes provide continuous data. This is compared with predefined limit and signal values.

Exceeding a limit value triggers an alarm and adjustment of the working method, which prevents damage and delays.
