Facade renovation is the refurbishing and renewing of an existing facade, in which the facade is cleaned, repaired, retro-insulated and finished again. The goal is a facade that looks smart again, lets through less moisture and insulates better. From simple repointing to a complete new facade cladding, the scope varies greatly depending on the situation.
Application
In facade renovation the condition of the facade is assessed first. Then the masonry can be cleaned, poor pointing is raked out and repointed, and cracks or loose bricks are repaired. Often the opportunity is used to retro-insulate, for example with cavity wall insulation or an insulated external wall system. As a final step, a new finish follows: fresh render, facade cladding or a coat of paint. This improves not only the appearance, but also the energy performance and lifespan.
Application details
A good facade renovation combines structural repair with moisture protection and insulation. The right materials and a vapour-open build-up prevent moisture from being trapped. Renovation is usually cheaper and more sustainable than demolishing and rebuilding the facade, and increases the comfort and value of the building. Work on the structure must comply with building regulations.
