What is ecological building?

Ecological building is a design and construction approach that keeps the impact on people, environment and nature as small as possible across the entire life cycle of a building. That means using natural and biobased materials, minimal energy demand, a healthy indoor climate, reuse at end of life, and respect for the site and biodiversity.

Core principles

Ecological building rests on five pillars:

  1. Materials — biobased and local: timber, clay, lime, flax, hemp, sheep wool
  2. Energy — passive shading, insulation, renewable sources (PV, heat pump)
  3. Water — rainwater harvesting, greywater systems, infiltration
  4. Indoor climate — vapour-open structures, low emissions, natural ventilation
  5. Life cycle — design for disassembly, reusable components, short supply chains
