Direct current (DC) is electrical current that flows in only one direction, with a (virtually) constant voltage. It is the counterpart of alternating current (AC), in which the current constantly changes direction.
Features
Direct current differs clearly from the mains supply:
- The mains supply delivers alternating current (AC)
- Many devices, batteries, LED lighting, solar panels and charging stations run on direct current
- An inverter or adapter converts AC into DC or vice versa
- In sustainable buildings DC is gaining ground: solar panels generate DC and batteries store DC, which can save conversion losses
Application
In and around the building, direct current appears in more and more places:
- PV installations (solar panels)
- Home batteries and energy storage
- Charging infrastructure for electric cars
- LED lighting
