Curing compound is a liquid chemical product applied to the surface of freshly placed concrete to form a moisture-retaining membrane, preventing premature water loss and ensuring proper hydration during the critical early curing period. Adequate curing is essential for concrete to reach its intended strength and durability.
Applications
When concrete is poured, a chemical reaction called hydration begins between the cement and water. This reaction is what gives concrete its strength, and it requires a sustained supply of moisture over a period of days to weeks. If the surface of the concrete dries out too quickly, particularly in hot, windy, or low-humidity conditions, the hydration process is disrupted. The result is weaker, more porous concrete that is prone to cracking, dusting, and reduced durability.
Curing compounds address this problem by forming a thin, typically imperceptible film over the concrete surface immediately after finishing. This film significantly reduces the rate of moisture evaporation, keeping the water within the concrete available for hydration. The compound is usually sprayed on using hand-pump sprayers, roller applicators, or mechanical spray equipment.
There are several types of curing compounds, broadly categorized by their base material. Resin-based curing compounds (acrylic, hydrocarbon, or wax-based) are the most common. Some are pigmented white to reflect sunlight and reduce surface temperature, which further aids curing in warm climates. Others are clear or use a fugitive dye that fades over time, useful when the appearance of the finished surface matters.
Curing compounds are widely used in flatwork such as slabs, pavements, floors, and bridge decks, where large surface areas are exposed to the atmosphere. They are a practical alternative to traditional curing methods like wet burlap, ponding, or plastic sheeting, especially on large-scale projects where manual curing would be labor-intensive.
It is important to note that some curing compounds can interfere with the adhesion of subsequent coatings, tiles, or overlays. Specifiers must choose compatible products when additional finishes are planned.
