Crepidoma is the multi-stepped platform that forms the base of a classical Greek or Roman temple, elevating the structure above the surrounding ground level. It serves both a structural and a ceremonial function, providing a solid foundation while visually distinguishing the temple as a sacred space.

Applications

The crepidoma is one of the defining elements of classical temple architecture. It typically consists of three steps, though the number can vary depending on the size and style of the building. The topmost step, known as the stylobate, directly supports the columns of the temple. The steps below the stylobate are collectively referred to as the stereobate.

In ancient Greek architecture, the crepidoma was constructed from carefully cut stone blocks, often limestone or marble. The steps were not designed for regular foot traffic; their height and depth made them impractical as a staircase for everyday use. Instead, worshippers typically entered the temple via a ramp or a designated set of smaller steps at the front. The crepidoma’s primary purpose was to create a visually imposing base that elevated the temple above its surroundings, reinforcing the building’s sacred character.

From a structural perspective, the crepidoma distributed the weight of the columns and the superstructure across a broader area of ground, improving the stability of the building. The stepped profile also helped manage rainwater drainage, directing water away from the foundation.

The crepidoma is found in nearly all major surviving Greek temples, including the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Hera at Paestum. Roman temples adopted and adapted the concept, though they more frequently used a raised podium with a frontal staircase instead of the Greek all-around stepped platform.

In modern architecture, the concept of a stepped base is still used to give monumental buildings a sense of presence and hierarchy, even though the term crepidoma is rarely applied outside historical contexts.
