What is Corian?
Corian is a brand name by DuPont for a solid surface material made from approximately one-third acrylic resin and two-thirds aluminium hydroxide (a mineral filler). It is widely used for worktops, washbasins and cladding thanks to its seamless fabrication possibilities and easy maintenance.
Properties
- Seamless joints — sheets can be invisibly bonded together
- Thermoformable — when heated, the material can be bent into shapes
- Non-porous — moisture, bacteria and stains cannot penetrate the surface
- Repairable — scratches and damage can be sanded out
- Through-coloured — the colour runs through the entire thickness of the material
Applications
- Kitchen worktops — seamless countertops with integrated sinks
- Bathrooms — washbasins, shower walls and wall cladding
- Façade cladding — ventilated façade panels in a range of colours
- Furniture — tables, reception desks and counters
- Healthcare — hygienic surfaces in hospitals and laboratories
Alternatives
Corian is the best-known brand, but comparable solid surface materials include HI-MACS, Staron and Avonite, which share largely the same properties.
