# What Is Convection in Construction?

**Convection is the transfer of heat through the movement of a fluid (air or liquid). In buildings, convection occurs when warm air rises and cooler air descends, creating natural circulation patterns. Understanding convection is essential for designing effective heating, ventilation, and insulation systems.**

## How Convection Works

When air is heated, it becomes less dense and rises. As it moves away from the heat source, it cools, becomes denser, and sinks back down. This creates a continuous circular flow called a convection current. The same principle applies to water in heating systems.

## Types of Convection

**Natural convection** — occurs without mechanical assistance. Warm air rises from a radiator, cools at the window or ceiling, and descends on the opposite side of the room.

**Forced convection** — uses fans or pumps to move air or water. Mechanical ventilation systems and central heating pumps rely on forced convection to distribute warmth efficiently.

## Convection in Building Design

– **Heating systems** — radiators and convectors heat rooms primarily through convection currents
– **Ventilation** — stack ventilation uses warm air rising through a building to draw fresh air in at lower levels
– **Heat loss** — air leaks around windows and doors create convection currents that carry warmth out of a building
– **Cavity walls** — air movement within wall cavities can transport heat upward, reducing insulation effectiveness unless the cavity is filled

## Reducing Unwanted Convection

Insulation materials work partly by trapping air in small pockets, preventing convection within the material. Draught-proofing stops convection currents through gaps. Cavity wall insulation fills the void where convection would otherwise circulate warm air toward the cold outer wall.
