Collapse is the sudden failure or caving in of a structure or part of a structure due to overloading, material failure or design deficiency.

What causes structural collapse?

Collapse occurs when the forces acting on a structure exceed its load-bearing capacity. This can happen for several reasons. Overloading places more weight or force on elements than they were designed to carry. Material degradation — such as corrosion of steel reinforcement or rot in timber — reduces strength over time. Design errors, poor detailing or construction defects can leave hidden weaknesses. External events like earthquakes, explosions or impact can also trigger sudden failure.

A collapse may be localised, affecting only a single element such as a beam or slab, or progressive, where the failure of one element transfers its load to neighbouring elements, causing a chain reaction throughout the structure.

How is collapse prevented?

Structural engineers design buildings with adequate safety factors, redundancy and robustness. Building codes require that structures can resist loads well beyond their expected service conditions. Progressive collapse is addressed through tie forces, alternative load paths and key-element design. Regular inspections identify deterioration before it becomes critical. Monitoring systems can detect unusual movements or deflections in real time.
