Central perspective, also known as one-point perspective, is a drawing technique in which all depth lines converge at a single vanishing point on the horizon line. It is the simplest form of perspective drawing and is widely used in architectural presentations to convey spatial depth on a flat surface.
How it works
In central perspective the viewer looks straight ahead toward a single point on the horizon, called the vanishing point. All lines that run parallel to the viewer’s line of sight converge toward this point in the drawing. Lines perpendicular to the line of sight remain horizontal or vertical.
The result is a familiar image: a street that appears to narrow into the distance, a corridor whose walls seem to move closer together, or a room in which the floor and ceiling taper toward the same point.
The technique was developed during the Renaissance by Filippo Brunelleschi and given a mathematical foundation by Leon Battista Alberti. It laid the groundwork for all later perspective methods in architecture and the visual arts.
Application
In architecture, central perspective is used for presentation drawings of interiors, streetscapes, and building fronts. It is particularly effective when the viewer looks directly at a facade or along the axis of a symmetrical space.
Architects use it to give clients a realistic spatial impression of a design. In technical construction drawings, plans, sections, and isometric views are preferred because they allow accurate dimensioning. Central perspective serves primarily as a communication tool to convey atmosphere and spatial quality.
Beyond one-point perspective, architects also employ two-point and three-point perspective for oblique viewpoints or views looking up at or down on a building.
