A Celtic field is a prehistoric agricultural field system characterised by a pattern of low earth banks that delineate small, roughly square plots. These structures typically date from the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age (approximately 1000 BC to the beginning of the Common Era) and remain visible in the landscape of Northwestern Europe.
Origin and characteristics
The name “Celtic field” is somewhat misleading, as these field systems are not exclusively associated with Celtic culture. The term was coined in the early 20th century and has remained in common academic use since.
The individual plots typically measure 20 by 20 to 40 by 40 metres and are surrounded by low banks ranging from 30 to 80 centimetres in height. These banks formed over centuries through repeated ploughing and the gradual accumulation of stones and soil along field edges. On aerial photographs and elevation maps, the patterns are often clearly visible as a regular grid across the landscape.
Celtic fields have been identified in the Netherlands, Denmark, northern Germany, and Great Britain. In the British Isles, similar systems are also known as “aggregate field systems.” Some of the best-preserved examples can be found on heathlands and moorlands where later agricultural activity did not obscure the original patterns.
Application
Although Celtic fields have no direct building application, they play a significant role in landscape architecture and spatial planning. Construction projects in areas where Celtic fields are present often require archaeological surveys before building permits are granted. The presence of a Celtic field can influence zoning plans and development regulations.
In landscape architecture, Celtic fields are regarded as valuable cultural-historical elements. Conservation and visibility of these prehistoric structures are increasingly prioritised in landscape redesign projects. Several municipalities have designated Celtic fields as protected archaeological monuments.
