Building hardware (also called architectural ironmongery) is the collective term for all metal fittings used to hang, close and operate doors, windows, shutters and gates. This includes hinges, locks, door handles, window stays and espagnolette bolts.
Types of Building Hardware
Building hardware falls into three main categories:
- Hanging hardware — everything that allows a door or window to swing: hinges, pivots and lift-off hinges
- Locking hardware — everything that secures a door or window: mortice locks, deadbolts, window fasteners and multi-point locking systems
- Operating hardware — handles, knobs, pulls, window stays and casement openers
Application
Building hardware is essential in every construction project:
- Internal doors — butt hinges and a tubular latch with lever handles
- External doors — heavy-duty hinges, multi-point lock and security cylinder
- Casement windows — friction stays and espagnolette handles
- Sliding doors — track systems with rollers and hook locks
- Shutters — pintles (hinge pins) and shutter bars
