# What is BBL?
**BBL stands for ‘Beroepsbegeleidende Leerweg’ (work-based learning pathway), a Dutch vocational training format in which students work four days per week at a training company and attend school one day per week.** It is similar to an apprenticeship and is the most common route to obtaining a construction trade qualification in the Netherlands.
## How it works
– **80% practice** — the student works four days per week at an accredited training company
– **20% theory** — one day per week at a regional training centre (ROC)
– **Employment contract** — the student has an apprenticeship contract and receives wages
– **Qualification** — upon completion, the student receives a recognised MBO diploma
## Application in construction
The BBL is particularly popular in the construction sector. Trades that can be learned via BBL include:
– Carpenter
– Bricklayer
– Tiler
– Painter
– Installation fitter
### Difference from BOL
Under the BOL (school-based pathway), the student attends school four days and does a work placement one day. The BBL is better suited for those who prefer learning by doing.
