An ESD floor (Electrostatic Discharge floor) is a floor that is conductive enough to drain static electricity slowly and in a controlled way. This prevents sudden discharges that can damage electronics or trigger explosions. ESD floors are installed where sensitive equipment or explosive gases are present.

Why an ESD floor?

Friction — for instance walking with shoes on a normal floor — can build up electrical charge. On contact, this discharges suddenly. To people it feels like a small shock, but for:

Types of ESD floor

Antistatic carpet With conductive fibres Limited effect

The choice depends on the working environment requirements. ESD requirements are set out in standards such as IEC 61340 and ANSI/ESD S20.20.

Construction

An ESD floor consists of:

  1. Conductive substrate — usually a copper earthing grid below the top layer
  2. Conductive adhesive — connects the top layer to the earthing grid
  3. ESD top layer — vinyl, rubber or epoxy with conductive fibres or particles
  4. Earth connection — link to the building earth

Operators usually wear ESD shoes or wristbands so their body is also conductively connected to the floor.
