What is an egg-and-dart moulding (cymatium)?
An egg-and-dart moulding, in Greek cymatium (κυμάτιον, kymation), is a classical ornamental band of alternating rounded egg- or acorn-shaped motifs and intervening arrow- or dart-shaped elements. It is among the oldest and most widespread decorative motifs in Greek and Roman architecture and recurs on capitals, cornices and mouldings in nearly every classical revival style.
Form and composition
An egg-and-dart moulding typically consists of:
- Egg motif — convex, with a rim or “cap” around it
- Dart or arrow motif — a vertical element between the eggs
- Lower band — often an astragal (bead-and-reel) beneath
- Upper band — a simple fillet closing the top
- Recessed background — to make the motifs stand out
The motif runs horizontally and can be repeated to any length.
Symbolism and origin
The egg is often read as a symbol of fertility and rebirth, the dart of protection. The form probably grew from:
- Olive-leaf motifs — on archaic Greek pottery
- Egg-shaped shields — comparable to scutes on a tortoise shell
- Stylised natural forms — bridging architecture and nature

Egg-and-dart is found on:
