An alignment cone and alignment hole are two matching components used in concrete formwork systems. The cone is a tapered plastic or metal fitting that slots precisely into the corresponding hole on an adjacent panel, ensuring that formwork elements are correctly aligned before concrete is poured.
How they work
Accurate alignment of formwork panels is critical in concrete construction. Misaligned panels result in surface irregularities, leaking joints, and dimensional errors in the finished structure.
The alignment cone is mounted on the inner face of one formwork panel. The alignment hole is located on the adjoining panel. When the two panels are brought together, the cone slides into the hole and automatically centres both elements relative to each other. This mechanical interlock allows large formwork walls to be assembled quickly and with high precision, reducing the need for manual levelling with spirit levels and tape measures.
The concept is similar to a dowel and dowel hole in timber joinery, but it is engineered for the heavier loads and tighter tolerances required in concrete construction.
Application
Alignment cones and holes are standard components in system formwork for walls, columns, and other vertical concrete elements. They are part of the product ranges offered by major formwork manufacturers such as Doka, PERI, and Harsco.
On site, they significantly speed up the formwork assembly process. After the concrete has cured and the formwork is stripped, the cones are removed for reuse. The remaining holes in the concrete surface are filled with repair mortar or a proprietary patching compound.
