What is ABS plastic?
ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a thermoplastic used in construction for pipes, fittings, drainage systems and various building products. The material combines impact resistance, rigidity and chemical resistance, making it suitable for demanding applications.
Properties
ABS owes its versatility to the combination of three monomers:
- Acrylonitrile — provides chemical resistance and hardness
- Butadiene — gives impact resistance and flexibility, even at low temperatures
- Styrene — makes the material easy to process and gives a glossy finish

Application
ABS is used in the construction sector in several ways:
- Drain pipes — ABS pipes are used for internal drainage and rainwater discharge. They are lighter than cast iron pipes and easy to solvent-weld
- Ventilation ducts — the material resists condensation moisture
- Sanitary fittings — shower traps, siphons and overflow fittings
- 3D printing — ABS is a commonly used filament for building models and prototypes
- Protective covers and housings — electrical installation components
Joining
ABS pipes and fittings are connected using a special ABS solvent cement. The material can also be welded, drilled and sawn with standard tools.
