What is a sustainable traditional energy system (DTS)?
A sustainable traditional energy system, abbreviated DTS (from the Dutch Duurzaam Traditioneel Energiesysteem), is a hybrid installation in which a conventional gas boiler or other traditional heating or power source is combined with one or more renewable sources such as photovoltaic panels, a heat pump or a pellet stove. The combination cuts energy costs and CO₂ emissions while preserving the comfort and security of supply of a traditional system.
Components
A DTS typically consists of:
- Traditional heat source — usually a high-efficiency gas boiler
- Renewable source — hybrid heat pump, solar thermal, PV panels or pellet stove
- Smart controller — decides which source delivers when
- Buffer or hot water storage tank — stores heated water for peak periods
Operation
The controller automatically switches between sources:
- In mild weather — heat pump or solar thermal provides heating
- In hard frost — the gas boiler steps in when the heat pump cannot keep up
- With surplus solar power — heat is stored in the buffer tank
- During grid congestion — the boiler takes over to relieve the electricity grid
Application
DTS systems are used in:
- Existing dwellings — as a stepping stone to fully sustainable living
- Heritage buildings — where full heat-pump retrofit is difficult
- Non-residential buildings — offices with variable loads
- Transition phases — until the building is fully insulated
