A sliding anchor is a connecting anchor that ties two building parts together while allowing limited movement in one direction. It transfers forces perpendicular to the joint, yet is free to slide along the other direction. This absorbs deformations caused by temperature, shrinkage and settlement without building up damaging stresses.
How does a sliding anchor work?
An ordinary anchor connects two parts rigidly. In a sliding anchor one end sits in a slot, a sleeve or a sliding tube. This lets the anchor move lengthwise while still providing support crosswise. The principle is similar to a sliding bearing, but as a point connection.
Application
Sliding anchors are used where building parts have to move relative to one another:
- Expansion joints — the sliding anchor connects both parts without blocking movement
- Cavity walls — the outer leaf expands and shrinks differently from the inner leaf; sliding anchors keep the leaves spaced while allowing vertical movement
- Facade cladding — cladding panels and brick slips are fixed to the backing structure with sliding anchors
- Precast concrete elements — elements that react to temperature
Points of attention
- Choose the sliding direction deliberately: crosswise the anchor must be firmly fixed
- The slot or sleeve needs enough play to absorb the expected movement
- Use stainless material, especially in the cavity and on the outside
