A roof balustrade is a protective barrier, either a solid parapet wall or an open railing system, installed along the perimeter of a flat roof or roof terrace to prevent falls and provide safety.
Types of roof balustrades
Roof balustrades come in several forms. A parapet wall is a solid masonry or rendered wall that extends above the roof surface, typically 0.3 to 1.2 metres high depending on its purpose. A railing-type balustrade uses vertical posts (balusters) with horizontal rails or glass panels to create a transparent barrier. Combinations of a low parapet topped with a railing are also common.
Materials range from brick and concrete for parapet walls to steel, aluminium, glass, and composite materials for railing systems. The choice depends on the structural capacity of the roof, the building’s architectural style, and the intended use of the roof space.
Safety requirements
Building regulations in most countries specify minimum heights for roof balustrades. For accessible roof terraces, a height of at least 1,000 mm to 1,100 mm is typically required. The balustrade must be strong enough to withstand a specified horizontal load and must not have openings large enough for a child to climb through or pass between.
When a flat roof is not intended for regular access, a lower upstand or edge protection may be acceptable. However, any roof that serves as a terrace, garden, or walkway requires a full-height balustrade that meets structural and safety standards.
Application
Roof balustrades are essential in both residential and commercial buildings with accessible flat roofs. In urban areas, rooftop terraces are increasingly popular, making balustrade design an important part of the building plan. The balustrade must be detailed carefully to ensure the roof membrane remains watertight at the connection points.
During renovations, adding a roof balustrade to convert a flat roof into a usable terrace often requires structural assessment to confirm the roof can support the added loads of the balustrade, furniture, and occupants.
