What is a rebate size?
The rebate size is the measurement of the opening in a window or door frame in which the glass, panel or door leaf fits — measured on the inside of the rebate (the step cut into the frame). It is the measurement you need to order glass or a door panel.
Rebate
The rebate is the L-shaped step around the inside of the frame. The glass or panel sits in this step and is held in place on the inside by glazing beads.
Rebate size vs. structural opening
| Rebate size | Structural opening | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | In the frame (for glass) | In the wall (for the frame) |
| What fits in it | Glass or panel | Frame |
| Smaller than | The frame size | — |
| Larger than | The glass size (2-3 mm clearance per side) | The frame size |
How to measure the rebate size
- Measure the width from rebate to rebate (left to right)
- Measure the height from rebate to rebate (top to bottom)
- Measure at multiple points — the smallest measurement counts
The glass size = rebate size minus 4-6 mm (2-3 mm clearance per side).
