A pumping station is a facility that lifts excess water from a low-lying area, such as a polder, up into a higher watercourse or directly into a river or the sea. It keeps the water level under control and prevents flooding in low-lying land.
How a pumping station works
In many coastal regions the land lies lower than the surrounding water. Without intervention, this land would flood. A pumping station solves this by actively moving water:
- Excess water from ditches and canals collects in the polder.
- The pumping station lifts this water into a higher collecting waterway.
- From there the water eventually flows to a river or the sea.
Historically windmills did this work; today pumping stations use electric or diesel-driven pumps such as Archimedean screws, centrifugal pumps or screw pumps.
Application
Pumping stations are essential to water management and are used for:
- Level control – maintaining a fixed water level for farmland and buildings.
- Flood defence – rapidly discharging rainwater during heavy downpours.
- Flushing – refreshing water to improve water quality.
For construction projects in low-lying areas, the presence and capacity of a pumping station are important for drainage and for the foundation.
