What is a power plant?

A power plant is an industrial installation that converts primary energy — such as heat from combustion, nuclear fission, flowing water, wind, sun or tides — into electrical energy that is distributed via the high-voltage grid. Power plants form the backbone of the electricity supply, and the choice of plant type largely determines a country’s CO₂ emissions.

How does it work in general?

In most plants the conversion follows these steps:

  1. Energy source delivers heat or motion
  2. Steam or water pressure drives a turbine (or wind/water drives it directly)
  3. Turbine spins a generator
  4. Generator produces electricity
  5. Transformer steps voltage up for the transmission grid

Exception: photovoltaic plants generate direct current directly through solar cells, which an inverter converts to alternating current.
