What is a power plant?
A power plant is an industrial installation that converts primary energy — such as heat from combustion, nuclear fission, flowing water, wind, sun or tides — into electrical energy that is distributed via the high-voltage grid. Power plants form the backbone of the electricity supply, and the choice of plant type largely determines a country’s CO₂ emissions.
How does it work in general?
In most plants the conversion follows these steps:
- Energy source delivers heat or motion
- Steam or water pressure drives a turbine (or wind/water drives it directly)
- Turbine spins a generator
- Generator produces electricity
- Transformer steps voltage up for the transmission grid
Exception: photovoltaic plants generate direct current directly through solar cells, which an inverter converts to alternating current.

Significance for construction
For architecture and construction the type of plant matters because:
- Grey power from fossil plants carries a high environmental impact
- Green power from wind, sun or water lowers a building’s environmental rating
- Combined heat and power (CHP) can supply waste heat to district heating
- Grid congestion restricts new large consumers in many countries
- All-electric buildings require sufficient grid capacity
Trend
Many countries are shifting away from coal and gas towards wind, solar and storage. Decentralised generation (PV on homes, small wind turbines) is growing rapidly.
