What is a laser distance meter?
A laser distance meter (also called a laser measure or laser rangefinder) is an electronic measuring instrument that uses a laser beam to measure the distance to a surface. The device calculates the distance based on the time it takes for the laser light to be reflected back.
How does a laser distance meter work?
The meter emits a short pulse of laser light that bounces off the target surface. The device measures the travel time or phase shift and calculates the distance. Modern laser distance meters are accurate to approximately 1–2 mm.
Features
Many laser distance meters offer additional functions:
- Area calculation — multiply two measurements for a floor area
- Volume calculation — three measurements for a room volume
- Pythagoras function — measure heights indirectly from two measurements
- Continuous measurement — the distance is displayed in real time (useful for positioning)
- Memory — store previous measurements
Applications
- Room surveying — faster and more accurate than a tape measure
- Checking construction drawings — compare dimensions on the plan with the actual situation
- Measuring for windows and kitchens — accurate dimensioning for bespoke products
- Facades and roofs — measure distances without a ladder or scaffold
- Setting out — verify distances when laying out the build
