What is a hole saw?

A hole saw is a cylindrical saw blade with a toothed edge that is fitted into a drill to cut round holes in sheet material such as wood, plasterboard, plastic or thin metal sheet.

How it works

The hole saw consists of a metal cylinder with saw teeth along its upper edge. In the centre sits a pilot drill that bites into the material first. This pilot pin starts the hole and keeps the saw in place, so that the toothed edge can rotate cleanly in a circle without wandering. As the drill turns, the teeth cut out a circle, leaving a round offcut inside the cylinder.

Hole saws come in many diameters and are often sold as a set with a common arbor. The choice of saw depends on the material: for metal, saws with finer, harder teeth are used than for wood. A lower speed and some lubricant help with harder materials.

Application

The hole saw is widely used for passing pipes and cables through, making openings for recessed spotlights and cutting holes for door handles and locks. Because the saw produces a neat, round opening, it is ideal for finishes where a round hole remains visible, such as lighting in a ceiling.
