A ground anchor is a metal pin, screw or anchor that is driven or screwed into the ground to secure a structure (fence, pergola, play equipment) in place. It prevents the structure from being blown over by wind or shifting.
Types of ground anchors
| Type | Method | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Ground socket (drive-in socket) | Driven into the ground | Fence posts, parasols, flagpoles |
| Ground screw | Screwed into the ground | Pergolas, garden rooms, decking (alternative to concrete pier) |
| Ground pin | Driven into ground + bolted down | Play equipment, trampolines |
| Anchor plate | Screwed to concrete + earth pin | Sheds on a concrete slab |
Ground screw as a foundation alternative
Ground screws are a popular alternative to concrete piers:
- No excavation needed
- Quick to install (by machine or by hand)
- Immediately load-bearing (no curing time)
- Less suitable for soft ground (peat)
| Application | Ground screw suitable? |
|---|---|
| Decking | Yes |
| Garden room (light) | Yes |
| Pergola | Yes (larger screws) |
| Garage (heavy) | No — use a concrete pier or strip foundation |
