What is a German truss?
A German truss is a traditional timber roof truss in which two rafters rise diagonally, are joined high up by a collar tie and stiffened with knee braces, without a full tie beam spanning the base. Its strength comes from the triangular bracing of the knee braces and from solid anchorage on the wall plates or a separate anchor beam.
Components
A German truss usually consists of:
- Two rafters — sloping timbers that carry the roof surface
- Collar tie — horizontal beam high in the truss connecting the rafters
- Knee braces — diagonal struts between rafter and collar tie
- Wall plates — bearers on the masonry on which the rafters sit
- Hammer beam (optional) — extra horizontal connection higher in the truss

Application
The German truss was used mainly in:
- Farm barns — free passage through the barn
- Churches and chapels — a more open roof space
- Stables and coach houses — unobstructed central aisle
- Timber-framed houses — typical in Germany and border regions
Advantages
- Free space — no tie beam in the middle of the room
- High ceiling — usable attic floor
- Distinctive appearance — aesthetically valuable in heritage buildings
- Workable span — up to about 8 metres
Disadvantages
- Spreading forces — the walls must resist horizontal thrust
- Craftsmanship — requires precise timber joints
- Not suitable for very large spans
