A gable finial is a decorative, vertical ornamental end piece placed at the top of a gable end, often made of timber or metal. It crowns the point where the facade and the ridge of the roof meet, giving the gable an elegant finish.
Application
The gable finial is best known from traditional and historic architecture, such as farmhouses and dwellings with a pointed gable. It marks the highest point of the gable end and was originally also used to cap the junction of the roof covering and gable point neatly and watertight. Today its function is mainly aesthetic.
Characteristics
A gable finial often consists of a vertical post topped with a turned or carved crown. In timber it is painted or treated against the weather; in metal (such as lead or cast iron) it is more durable. Its shape matches the style of the house and is related to the ridge finial, the ornamental end piece on the ridge.
