A Cusveller floor is a type of beam-and-block floor system consisting of prefabricated prestressed concrete beams with lightweight infill blocks placed between them, topped with a structural concrete screed to form a complete floor slab. It is named after the Dutch manufacturer that developed and popularized the system.
Applications
The Cusveller floor system belongs to a family of prefabricated concrete floor solutions that became widely used in residential and light commercial construction, particularly in the Netherlands and other parts of Western Europe, from the mid-20th century onward. These systems were developed to speed up construction, reduce on-site labor, and eliminate the need for extensive formwork.
The construction process is straightforward. Prestressed concrete beams, typically T-shaped or inverted-T-shaped in cross-section, are placed at regular intervals across the supporting walls. Lightweight concrete or expanded clay (such as Leca) infill blocks are then laid between the beams, resting on the bottom flanges. Once all beams and blocks are in position, a layer of reinforced concrete (the structural topping or compression layer) is poured over the entire assembly. This topping bonds everything together, creating a monolithic floor slab.
The advantages of the Cusveller floor system are several. The prefabricated beams and blocks are light enough to be handled without heavy lifting equipment, making the system suitable for small to medium-sized building sites. The blocks provide thermal and acoustic insulation, and the flat underside of the finished floor can serve directly as a ceiling surface with minimal finishing. Construction speed is significantly faster than casting a full in-situ concrete slab, since no temporary formwork or shoring is needed (except for longer spans).
The system is commonly used for ground floors, intermediate floors, and roof structures in residential buildings. Span capabilities typically range from 3 to 8 meters, depending on the beam dimensions and loading requirements.
