A cunet (also spelled cunette) is a narrow, secondary trench excavated at the bottom of a larger foundation trench or ditch, used to reach a deeper bearing layer or to facilitate drainage during construction. It allows builders to deepen specific sections of an excavation without widening the entire dig.
Applications
In foundation engineering and earthwork, a cunet serves a practical purpose during the early stages of construction. When a general excavation has been made for a building’s foundations, the soil at the bottom may not always provide adequate bearing capacity. In such cases, a cunet is dug along the line of the planned foundation walls, extending down to a firmer layer of soil or rock that can reliably support the structure.
The cunet is deliberately kept narrow, typically matching the width of the foundation wall or strip footing that will be placed in it. This approach minimizes the volume of soil that needs to be removed and reduces the cost and time associated with deep excavation. Once the cunet has been dug to the required depth, the foundation is poured or constructed within it, and the surrounding excavation is backfilled as needed.
Cunets are also used for drainage purposes. In waterlogged or poorly draining sites, a cunet at the lowest point of an excavation can collect and channel groundwater to a sump or pump, keeping the main working area dry enough for construction to proceed. This application is particularly common in civil engineering projects such as canal construction, fortification works, and road building.
Historically, the term cunet has strong associations with military engineering. In the construction of moats and defensive ditches, a cunet was often dug along the center of the ditch bottom to increase its effective depth and complicate enemy crossing attempts.
In modern construction, the principle of the cunet remains relevant, though the term itself is less commonly used outside specialized or European contexts.
