A crescent is a row of terraced houses or buildings arranged in a curved, arc-shaped plan, typically forming a half-moon or sweeping bow when viewed from above. The form became one of the most distinctive features of Georgian and Regency-era urban planning in Britain.

The crescent emerged as an urban design concept in 18th-century England, combining elegant architecture with thoughtful town planning. The most famous early example is the Royal Crescent in Bath, designed by John Wood the Younger and completed in 1774. Its 30 terraced houses form a continuous, unified facade along a sweeping curve, overlooking a large open lawn. The design demonstrated that residential buildings could function as monumental civic architecture.

Crescents were typically built as speculative developments for wealthy residents. The curved layout offered several practical and aesthetic advantages. Architecturally, the arc created a grand visual effect that a straight terrace could not achieve, lending the row of houses a palatial appearance. From a planning perspective, the curve allowed buildings to embrace a green space or garden, providing residents with attractive views and a sense of openness.

The form also influenced traffic flow and streetscape. Crescent-shaped streets created natural focal points within the urban fabric, often anchoring a neighborhood or serving as a transition between different areas of a town. Many crescents were integrated into larger planned layouts that included squares, circuses (circular arrangements), and connecting avenues.

Beyond Bath, notable examples include the Park Crescent in London (designed by John Nash), Lansdown Crescent in Bath, and numerous crescents in Edinburgh’s New Town. The concept also spread to other countries, influencing urban planning in continental Europe and North America.

In modern urban design, curved building arrangements are still used, though they are more often described in terms of their geometry rather than by the historic term crescent.
