# What Is a Consistency Range?

## Understanding Atterberg limits
The Swedish scientist Albert Atterberg identified that clay soils pass through distinct states as their moisture content changes. The boundaries between these states are called Atterberg limits:

– **Plastic limit (PL)** — The moisture content at which the soil transitions from a semi-solid to a plastic state.
