# What is a Coffer (Cassette)?
**A coffer (also called a cassette, caisson or lacunar) is a recessed, usually square or rectangular panel set into a ceiling, vault or wall.** Coffers are arranged in a regular grid pattern and are a hallmark of classical, Renaissance and neoclassical architecture.
