A chemical anchor (also called a resin anchor or injection anchor) is a fixing system in which a threaded rod or bolt is bonded into a drilled hole using a two-component resin. The resin cures and creates an extremely strong connection between the fastener and the base material (concrete, brick, masonry).
How does it work?
The installation follows these steps:
- Drill the hole — bore a hole of the correct diameter and depth
- Clean the hole — remove dust and debris with a blow-out pump and brush
- Inject the resin — dispense the two-component resin from a cartridge into the hole
- Insert the stud — push the threaded rod into the resin with a rotating motion
- Cure — after the specified curing time (10-60 minutes) the connection is load-bearing
Application
Chemical anchors are used for heavy-duty fixings:
- Steel structures — fastening steel columns and beams to concrete
- Railings and fences — anchoring into concrete or masonry
- Window frames — in porous or hollow blocks where mechanical fixings are insufficient
- Canopies and pergolas — fixing heavy structures to facades
- Renovation — anchoring into existing concrete or masonry
Advantages
- Very high tensile loads achievable
- No expansion forces in the base material
- Suitable for cracked and uncracked concrete
- Can be used close to edges without spalling
