What is a building core?
A building core is the central, load-bearing part of a building that houses the vertical circulation and services — staircases, lift shafts and service risers. The core forms the structural heart of the building and is essential for both stability and functionality, especially in taller buildings.
Functions of the core
- Stability — the core resists horizontal forces (wind, earthquakes) and prevents the building from swaying
- Vertical circulation — stairs and lifts are centrally placed for short walking distances
- Service risers — water, electricity and ventilation run vertically through the core
- Fire safety — the core is often a fire compartment and serves as an escape route
Applications
- Office towers — a concrete core surrounded by a steel or concrete frame
- Residential towers — the core contains lifts, staircases and utility rooms
- Hospitals — multiple cores for separate circulation routes
- Car parks — concrete cores with staircases and lift pits
Core types
There are several arrangements: a central core (in the middle of the building), an eccentric core (to one side) or multiple cores spread across the building. The choice depends on the building shape, height and function.
