What is a bucket-ladder dredger?
A bucket-ladder dredger is a floating dredging vessel in which an endless chain of buckets passes around two sprockets to scoop soil, sand or clay from the underwater bottom and bring it to the surface, where it is offloaded to a barge or onshore. It is one of the oldest mechanical dredging techniques, used in the Netherlands since the 16th century and largely replaced in the 20th century by cutter-suction and trailing-suction hopper dredgers.
How it works
A bucket-ladder dredger consists of:
- Floating pontoon or hull — anchored with spuds or anchors
- Bucket ladder — an inclined steel structure reaching the bed
- Endless bucket chain — often 30–50 buckets of 100–800 litres each
- Top tumbler with drive shaft — powered by steam, diesel or electric motor
- Chute — guides the bucket contents to a side-tied barge
As the chain runs, the buckets scoop material from the bed, invert at the top and discharge through a chute. Because the ladder can be lowered, dredging depth up to ~25 m is adjustable.
Application
Although largely superseded by suction dredgers, bucket-ladder dredgers are still used for:
- Deepening of channels and ports
- Winning of sand, clay or gravel
- Remediation of contaminated waterbeds
- Construction of canals and locks
- Underwater archaeology and wreck recovery (small models)
- Hard clay or gravel where suction dredgers struggle
