# What is a bastei?
**A bastei is a semicircular or horseshoe-shaped defensive tower projecting from a fortification wall, designed to provide flanking fire along the wall.** The bastei is the precursor to the bastion and emerged in the 15th and 16th centuries as a response to the introduction of gunpowder weapons.
## Characteristics
– **Semicircular or horseshoe shape** — unlike the earlier square wall towers
– **Low, broad construction** — to be less vulnerable to cannon fire
– **Massive masonry** — thicker walls than medieval towers
– **Gun positions** — equipped with embrasures and platforms for cannons
## Difference from a bastion
– A **bastei** is round or semicircular
– A **bastion** is pentagonal (arrow-shaped)
– The bastion is a further development of the bastei, offering better flanking coverage
## Application
Basteis are found in fortified towns from the transition period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, particularly in Central Europe. Famous examples include the Bastei in Dresden and numerous town fortifications in southern Germany and Austria.
