Glass fittings are the collection of brackets, clamps, hinges, locks and handles with which glass doors, walls and panels are fixed and made movable. Because glass cannot be screwed like timber, glass fittings connect the glass to the surrounding structure without damaging the pane.
Application
Glass fittings are used with glass doors, glass partition walls, balustrades and shower enclosures. Think of point fixings (spider fittings) that carry a glass facade, clamping profiles that hold a glass balustrade, and pivot hinges, locks and handles for glass doors.
Because the fittings remain visible, their appearance plays a large role: much glass hardware is made of brushed or polished stainless steel to suit the sleek, transparent character of glass constructions.
Characteristics
Characteristic is that the glass is clamped or fixed through drilled holes, with rubber or plastic interlayers cushioning the contact between glass and metal. This prevents stress peaks, which can cause glass to break. For moving parts, toughened or laminated safety glass is used. Correct dimensioning and installation are crucial, because glass tolerates no play and no point loading.
