Non-timber facade cladding covers all panel, strip and cassette materials made of stone, cement, plastic or metal used to finish an outer wall. These materials are often low-maintenance, fire-safe and colour-fast, and like timber cladding they are usually mounted on a ventilated batten frame in front of the structure or insulation.
Application
Fibre cement panels are strong, flat boards available in many colours that create a clean, modern facade. HPL (high pressure laminate) panels are impact-resistant plastic boards with a decorative top layer, widely used on schools and offices. Brick slips are thin slices of brick or natural stone that give the look of masonry without the weight of a full cavity wall. Ceramic tiles are colour-fast and highly durable.
Characteristics
Metal cassettes and profiles give an industrial or high-end appearance. Zinc and aluminium are light, corrosion-resistant and available in various finishes. Corten steel forms a protective, rust-brown oxide layer that halts further corrosion and gives a distinctive colour. Plastic (for example composite or PVC boards) is light, low-maintenance and often imitates wood. When choosing a material, fire rating, weight, detailing and the desired service life all play an important role.
