What are emissions?

Emissions are all releases of substances or energy from an installation, material or activity into the air, water or soil. In construction the focus is mainly on greenhouse gases (CO₂, methane), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and noise or vibration emissions.

Main emissions in construction

Emissions across the life cycle

A building emits during each phase:

  1. Raw material extraction — limestone, iron ore, sand
  2. Material production — particularly cement and steel
  3. Transport — to factory and site
  4. Construction itself — site traffic, machines, energy use
  5. Use (operational) — heating, cooling, electricity
  6. Maintenance and renovation — replacement of materials
  7. Demolition and waste — incineration, landfill, recycling
