Competencies in construction are the knowledge, skills and behavioural traits a building professional requires to carry out work to a high standard.
What do competencies involve?
Construction competencies go beyond technical ability alone. They encompass three interconnected dimensions:
- Knowledge — understanding of building science, regulations, materials and processes. For example, a structural engineer must understand load paths, while a bricklayer must know the properties of mortar and masonry units.
- Skills — the practical ability to perform tasks correctly and efficiently, such as reading drawings, operating plant, setting out levels or welding steel connections.
- Behavioural traits — professional attitudes including safety awareness, quality consciousness, communication, teamwork and the ability to solve problems on site.
Competency frameworks are used by certification bodies, employers and training providers to define what a worker at each level should be able to demonstrate. In many countries, proof of competence is a legal requirement before a person may carry out certain activities — particularly work involving structural safety, fire protection or electrical installations.
