The first quarter of 2026 was an absolute record quarter for home batteries in the Netherlands. Grid operators registered 9,417 new home batteries — 37% more than the previous quarter. Total registered capacity rose from 102.9 megawatts to 190.2 megawatts: an increase of 85%. In March alone, 3,961 new home batteries were registered, a rise of 36% compared to February.
But why is the market growing so fast? And is a home battery the right choice for you?

Why Is the Market Exploding?
Three factors are playing out simultaneously:
1. End of Net Metering in 2027
Until 2027, Dutch households with solar panels can offset the electricity they feed back into the grid against their consumption at full retail price. This is known as net metering (saldering). From 2027, this arrangement disappears. You will then receive a much lower compensation for electricity you feed back.
With a home battery:
– You store your solar power during the day
– You use it yourself in the evening
– You become less dependent on feed-in compensation
Many households are buying a battery now to be prepared. That explains the peak in registrations.
2. Grid Congestion Forces Alternatives
In a growing number of areas in the Netherlands, the electricity grid is at capacity. Businesses and agricultural operations that cannot get a new or heavier connection are choosing a battery as an alternative. From 1 July 2026, this will also apply to small consumers.
3. Prices Still Relatively Low (For Now)
Despite the announced price increases caused by the phasing out of Chinese export subsidies, home batteries were still relatively affordable in the first half of 2026. Many consumers are buying now, before prices rise.

The payback period becomes more favourable after 2027. Once you can no longer net meter, the electricity you currently offset at full retail price will be worth more when stored in your battery and used yourself — that is financially more advantageous than feeding it back at a low rate.

Europe Is Growing Too
The growth is not limited to the Netherlands. The European home battery market is growing at 40–50% per year. EUPD Research expects the market to increase sixfold by 2029, reaching nearly 120 GWh of total capacity. Eastern Europe in particular is expected to see substantial growth.
In 2024, 21.9 GWh of battery storage capacity was installed across Europe — 15% more than the year before.
